Google Friend Connect: Look, ma...no files!

Labels: Google Friend Connect, new features
Normally when we misplace files here at the Googleplex, we ask our best engineers to get them back. But today, we've gotten rid of a few files on purpose, and we're happy to see them go!
Today, we're making it even easier to get started with Google Friend Connect. We've heard from a number of you that uploading files to activate your website is not always easy. So starting today, you no longer have to worry about downloading or uploading files. Setting up a new website just involves entering your site's name and URL upon logging into www.google.com/friendconnect.
Additionally, we've updated the "canvas mode" that's used inside gadgets. So now, when you click the zoom icon in the upper right corner of some gadgets, you'll see a lightbox that displays the gadgets' contents, instead of being taken to a new webpage.

yep, all you need to do is verify that the referer is not something else other than the domain entered.

Looks like it's not rolled out everywhere yet. I don't notice any difference.

Kelsey -- Noted, thanks. :)
My. Wizard -- You can safely delete rpc_relay.html and canvas.html if you've uploaded them.
Nyarnon -- Supporting Google Sites is a great idea. Currently, due to due to security precautions, using Friend Connect on Google Sites is not possible.
dellfalconer -- Blogger blogs powered by Friend Connect will receive the new lightboxes soon for their gadgets. Apologies for missing that in my post.

It's not my Blogger blog I meant. I added an entirely new site of mine and didn't see the new gadget. Not sure how it's supposed to work. What's to keep people from adding sites that don't belong to them?

dellfalconer -- If the gadget has the zoom icon in the top right (the two interlinked boxes), clicking it will take you to a "lightbox" mode. Try it on the members gadget on this blog.
To your other question, if someone adds a site that's not theirs, they can't put gadgets on it or view data from the gadgets the real owner has embedded.

The sign in widget doesn't appear to work anymore:
"We're sorry...
This gadget is configured incorrectly. Webmaster hint: Please ensure that "Friend Connect Settings - Home URL" matches the URL of this site."

OK, so you mean you still have to add at least one widget, meaning you have to add some code snippet to at least one file, then publish that file. But you don't need to add files provided by Google to the server in order to activate the site for Google Friends. Right?

1. Will "Canvas" continue to be supported?
2. [useLightBoxForCanvas: false,] doesn't seem to be working. I've tried [useLightBoxForCanvas: 'false',] too.
3. The "New tab opened bug" (which I understand is being worked on).
4. Would it be possible to change the call to open the lightbox on the same page?
e.g. http://domain.com/gadgetpage.html?fcsite=XXX&fcprofile=XXX
Rather than the root domain.
e.g. http://domain.com/?fcsite=XXX&fcprofile=XXX
Firstly because it is confusing for the user and secondly there are occasions when a site owner may not have a gadget on the index page.

I am first on web googlefried. It is powerful today. I works every edge of program. I has a domain server but no logon user. I talks to hotel manager who says a DVD better than computer. I do not think so this. As I agrees to give her a DVD of program to apply Domain name service.

Curious. I want to use friend connect to build a social networking site. I have built other SNS's sites in the past, but they have all revolved around a login page that was consistant with the site's login data field. Now with friend connect, I understand they can authorize through google, but what information would be available for my database after I connect them through friend connect?

No you cant use it on Google Sites, since a few years, at Google, one hand doesn't know anymore what the other does. Call it the price of success or the beginning of the end.
